Man Killed Walking on Dark Road; Tragedy as He Walks Home from Chapel with Wife

A 76-YEAR-OLD-man was knocked down and killed as he walked home from chapel with his wife. Ken Drake was hit as he crossed the A69 in darkness near their home at Melkridge, near Haltwhistle, Northumberland.

The couple ran a holiday let, Bankside Cottage, overlooking woodland at Hightown Farm in Melkridge.

In the excavation season at the nearby Vindolanda roman site they also put up dig volunteers at Hightown Old Farm.

Last night Mr Drake's grieving wife Kris told how the regular short Sunday evening walk home turned to tragedy.

Mrs Drake said: "We had walked from chapel at Haltwhistle, as we had done many times before.

"We came up the road out of Melkridge and waited until there was no traffic then crossed over the road where it is single carriageway.

"I thought we were both on the verge and I could see the cars coming and thought we could walk along to where we live.

"It's the only thing you can do there if you are on foot - they have had the old road closed for quite a few weeks because of a landslip. …
