THERE has been a lot of talk about Roman Abramovich's gift for instability bringing Chelsea success, but the fact is that only once since the days of Jose Mourinho has the English title been wrested from Manchester's grip: by Carlo Ancelotti, who was then let go.

True, Chelsea have won the European title since they allowed the Mourinho regime to disintegrate, but so has Mourinho. He has also won the national titles of Italy and Spain. And, lest we stray on to the aesthetic issues supposed to be close to the Russian owner's heart, has also shown that he can provide beautiful football if convinced -- as at Real Madrid -- that it is part of his obligation.

Had Chelsea been able to keep him ... well, suffice it to say that Sir Alex Ferguson, whom Mourinho all too briefly knocked off his perch, must bless the day when it became clear the difficulties between Mourinho and Abramovich were terminal. …
