WINNER: Tom Best PROTECTING his family was his only thought when have-a-go hero Tom Best rugby tackled a burglar to the ground. The Middlesbrough dad didn't even have time to get dressed before confronting the intruder in his Middlesbrough home.

Thinking only of his pregnant girlfriend and her two young nieces who were staying over, Tom jumped out of bed and pinned the criminal to the ground. Modest about his actions the 22-year-old said: "I don't know about being brave, I just did what seemed right at the time - I didn't really think about the consequences. "I'm just glad it all ended OK and the family weren't hurt or anything apart from being shaken up by it all."

The bar manager of Liberty's In Town on Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, was nominated for the Outstanding Act of Bravery award by Dave Causier, manager of The Normanby pub on Normanby Road.

Dad-of-four Dave said: "He doesn't seem the type of person, he comes across as quite timid and shy but when this has happened he has thought about other people first.

"When push has come to shove he has stood up to be counted and what he did was very brave.

"It also sends out a message that good people in the community won't stand for burglars or criminals coming into their house.

"I think Tom should be commended for his actions."

RUNNER-UP: Charlie Cross QUICK thinking Charlie Cross put his training into action when fire broke out while visiting a friend's flat.

The 20-year-old who has ambitions of becoming a firefighter reacted in textbook fashion to the blaze in a neighbouring flat.

A volunteer for Cleveland Fire Support Network, Charlie got a friend to call the fire brigade while he tried to rouse the person in the Thornaby property. He checked for heat with the back of his hand against the door and kept banging on the door and windows to get the individual to respond. …
