Pards :We Stood Up to Be Counted; Boss Praises Players for Coping with Pressure

ALAN PARDEW today applauded his players for standing up to "the pressure" against Wigan Athletic.

United knew they would enter the history books at St James' Park if they lost as the first team to lose five consecutive Premier League games.

Pardew admitted none of that was lost on his players.

He told the Chronicle: "We were under pressure and our players had to stand up that and they did.

"They should be applauded for that."

Pardew said a lack of confidence had affected his players of late.

He added: "Confidence is important. Whatever level of football you play at, everybody needs confidence.

"It does not matter what team you are.

"Look at Chelsea and Arsenal and look at Everton.

"Everybody is demanding so much of teams."

Pardew did not get carried away with four successive losses and he was not becoming too excited about last night's 3-0 win.
