I WOULD love to see Alan Pardew really go for it this year in the FA Cup.

I genuinely had the tingle of excitement ahead of the thirdround draw and I am not too disappointed with Brighton away as I think it is one Newcastle should be winning.

Having lived and breathed the football air on Tyneside, I know exactly what the competition means to the folk who plough their life into the club.

Even 22 years ago when I was wearing the No 9 shirt at St James', people still spoke fondly of the three cup final victories of the 1950s with great and grand tales of Wor Jackie and company.

In my time at Newcastle I had some great memories of the FA Cup.

In 1990 we reached round five and played Manchester United at home.

Man U and Fergie, of course, were on their way to the first trophy of the Fergie era - but I tell you they had to fight their way past us and edged it 3-2. The build-up to the game had been about taking Newcastle to Wembley - we were only in the Second Division but the lads were swept away with cup fever. …
