CHILDREN who attend Lifeworks OSHC experience the joy of having pets without the added responsibility for parents of needing to monitor their care.

Nominated supervisor Lauren Newton said children love caring for the centre's resident hens and guinea pigs.

The children have designed and built purpose-made guinea pig playgrounds, bathed and lovingly brushed them and have even wrapped them in doll's blankets, tucked them into prams and taken them for walks.

aMostly though, the children just enjoy sitting on the grass nursing and patting the pets while the animals nibble on a carrot,a she said.

The hens receive special treatment as well a[pounds sterling] they are allowed to roam freely around the outdoor play area and often become part of the children's play.

Not only are the hens great friends for the children, but they also provide eggs which the children collect, along with lettuce planted in the centre's vegetable garden; these are also turned into delicious snacks. …
