NORTHERLY winds have been playing merry hell with the ocean, with the sea surface temperature yo-yoing crazily this week down as low as 18A[degrees] and peaking over 25A[degrees].

The wind seems to cool down the inshore water or blow the current wider and produce a cool upwelling, but as soon as that northerly backs off, the current again has been raging south, cobalt and warm.

Mahi mahi have been taken around the Fisheries FADs off Ballina and Evans Head, with trolled lures working well initially to locate the fish.

But these canny pelagics can wise-up pretty fast so it pays to try different trolling and casting lures and soft plastics in varying sizes and colours as soon as they go off the bite.

It also doesn't hurt to work up to a kilometre or more wide of the FAD because the bigger fish in particular like to roam a little.

Brett at Ballina Bait and Tackle says some snapper have been taken out to about 42 fathoms when the current allows and there have been unconfirmed whispers of mackerel. …
