THE Australian meat industry is about to endure a hammering from its employees union, with serious concerns about the exploitation of overseas workers.

While Australia's Immigration Minister maintains Australia's settlement services are the best in the world, the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union's industrial officer Lee Norris said there were labour hire practices within the Australian meat processing industry involving overseas workers, that didn't meet minimum standards.

He said the union had written to Australia's Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten about its C[pounds sterling]serious concernsC[yen].

C[pounds sterling]The union is about to devote some serious time and resources into a crackdown on these racketeers and charlatans who are exploiting overseas workers,C[yen] Mr Norris said.
