LOCAL companies attending a business seminar believe UK employment laws have become more complex which has led to increasing workloads and red tape.

The views were voiced at a recent business seminar organised by recruitment services provider Pertemps in Newcastle, with an employment law expert from Weightmans Solicitors.

More than 100 people from the local business community attended the event representing a cross section of companies.

According to a straw poll taken among nearly 100 delegates who attended the event, 81% thought employment law had got more complex to manage, and nearly 70% believed their workloads and red tape had increased due to the laws.

Kath Dellow, regional operations manager at Pertemps, hosted the event at St James' Park. She said: "There comes a high degree of responsibility when recruiting staff, and employment compliance brings an increased amount of paperwork. This straw poll suggests businesses are having to shoulder more responsibility when it comes to employment law. …
