GLOBAL markets started the week nervously, although the FTSE 100 Index recovered later in the day to close marginally higher at 5,921.

Just as things were beginning to stabilise for Europe, Mario Monti's weekend decision to resign as Italy's prime minister threatened renewed uncertainty for the eurozone's most vulnerable economies. Silvio Berlusconi's unexpected comeback in Italian politics could prove negative for sentiment as Italy's borrowing costs jumped on Monday and analysts warned of a fresh outbreak of political turbulence. Turning to the top movers in the FTSE 100 Index, Smith & Nephew was amongst the day's best performers as its shares added nearly 2% to PS6.78. Investec raised its recommendation on the shares, partly citing renewed enthusiasm for its recent acquisition of Healthpoint Biotherapeutics. Eurasian Natural Resources (ENRC), on the other hand, was amongst the worst losers after shedding 2. …
