TWENTY years ago this month the first SMS, enclosing a Christmas greeting, was sent, we now send 8 trillion texts per year.

SMS, short messaging service, became a powerful instrument; it transformed the way we communicate, whether it is in personal or professional circumstances.

Of course back then not many people, myself included, saw the need for text messaging and communicating on the go, especially when it came to business. At the time there was a limit on your word count and navigating to edit text was very tricky. Now thanks to the touchscreen you can cut, paste and spell check all texts before hitting that send button.

SMS communication evolved beyond a person-to-person tool to an information and control resource that has changed society and behaviour, resulting in a new form of language, txt spk, (text speak) that often challenges the rules of grammar. Nevertheless, text messages have continued to evolve and became a necessity for work, business and advertising. …
