Family Hold Service for Tragic Lawyer

A MEMORIAL service is being held on Tyneside to remember a lawyer who died in a tragic accident in the Middle East.

Roger Stokes, formerly of Gosforth, Newcastle, was found with a head injury in his flat in Yemen, the country where he had lived for 15 years.

The 49-year-old shipping lawyer was taken to hospital but had lost a lot of blood and died of his injuries.

Despite initial concerns that foul play may have been involved, a police investigation found there were no suspicious circumstances and his family understands his injuries were sustained in a fall.

Now, as his relatives were unable to travel to Yemen for his funeral as the Foreign Office advised it was too dangerous, they are holding a memorial service to enable them to say their goodbyes.

His sister Helen Williams, 46, who grew up with Roger in Heworth, Gateshead, said: "We have been contacted by lots of his friends and colleagues since his death, and we decided to hold a memorial so that people could have the chance to pay their respects. …
