Synners Seek Win in Memory of Peter; Non-League Football

BILLINGHAM Synthonia are dedicating tomorrow's rearranged FA Vase game at Spennymoor to the memory of club stalwart Peter Lax.

A popular figure at Synners and former long-time Northern League committee member, he passed away following a long illness last week and the Teesside football community united in tribute at his funeral service yesterday.

"Peter was a lovely guy and Synners through and through," said assistant manager Lee Tucker.

"It would be great to remember him with a win."

Dan Newby is doubtful for the third round tie, which has already been postponed twice and - like the rest of the non-league programme - is at the mercy of the elements.

Striker Andy Jennings has left Synners to join EvoStik side Blyth Spartans but the door has been left open for him to return.

"We had a lovely chat and he said he improved in his time at the club," Tucker added.

"But he has never played at that level before and, at 29 or 30, he said he would regret it if he didn't take the chance. But our door is always open to him."

Top scorer Austin Johnston is back from a ban as Guisborough try to put a bad day at the Northern League office against lowly Penrith behind them at another one of the strugglers, rock bottom South Shields.

Johnston is one of four players returning to the Priorymen squad, but versatile left footer Gary Wood faces up to two months out after damaging right ankle ligaments in the 3-0 reverse to Penrith.

Marske play the first of two games in the space of five days against fourth-placed Bedlington at the GER Stadium and head into it on a high.

The Seasiders lost 2-1 at Newcastle Benfield after leading last Saturday, but rebounded with a 4-0 midweek romp at South Shields, where their forwards were on form and highly-rated keeper Ollie West was dependable back between the sticks. …
