LONDON has had an extraordinary 2012 -- and not just because of the wild success of the Olympics or the excitement of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. As well as those shared moments, the response to this newspaper's campaigns has been remarkable.

In September, we launched the Ladder for London, a call for companies to offer apprenticeships to some of the thousands of unemployed young people in the capital. Our campaign brought together voluntary group City Gateway and young people with dozens of employers -- and the results have been transformative. In three months we have secured pledges for more than 550 apprenticeships from over 200 organisations, from Goldman Sachs to the Royal Opera House. Now we want to expand the campaign to create a further 1,000 apprenticeships across London.

At the same time, the Get London Reading campaign that we launched in June 2011 has borne real fruit. Our reports revealed that one in four London children was leaving primary school unable to read and write properly. …
