THE festive season is not just a time for celebration and generosity, but also excessive consumption.

As the hue of Christmas fades and we begin preparations for the final bash of 2012, Australiaas garbage bins are overflowing with all manner of junk.

Rotting leftovers, mountains of glass bottles and reams of gift wrapping will all find their way into our neighbourhood bins.

The festive week is one of the most intense times of the year for waste management services a thatas why Lismore Recycling and Recovery Centre (the biggest tip in the Northern Rivers) is open today and will remain open throughout the festive week except New Yearas Day.

During the holidays the volume of regular waste produced per person in Lismore increases by 11%, recyclables by 15% and organic waste by 23%, according to the councilas waste operations co-ordinator, Kevin Trustum.
