PLAN FOR ART TRAIL; New Panel Is Set Up

A PUBLIC art trail could be introduced across a Teesside borough under new proposals. Redcar and Cleveland Council is to set up a public art advisory panel to oversee the provision of artwork.

Its role will be to oversee all proposals for public art in the borough that are funded, or part-funded by the council, or being installed on council land or forming part of a planning condition.

Councillor Olwyn Peters, Cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, who will be the panel's chairman, told the the council's cabinet that in setting up the panel there was no attempt to stifle art projects.

"We have some fantastic art works and communities have some fantastic stories to be told through art." Councillor Stephen Goldswain, Cabinet member for community safety, said public art in the borough had been provided on an ad hoc basis in the past.

He said the council aimed to boost tourism in the borough and he thought a public arts trail leading from Temenos in Middlesbrough through Redcar and Cleveland to Whitby could be established. …
