THE councilas handling of re-hiring and firing Fraser Coast water and sewerage workers has been blasted by Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen.

aMy question is if council, as it claims, can absorb 30 workers from Wide Bay Water into jobs within council, what have its existing council workers been doing? What are their job descriptions?a Mr Sorensen said.

aSome of these Wide Bay Water blokes who have lost their jobs in recent days are being asked to train council workers to do those jobs once theyare gone.

aThis is dreadful thing to be doing to people and particularly at this time of the year. It is totally un-Christmas.a

Up to 50 water and sewerage workers are spending the Christmas-New Year break wondering what their jobs in council will be, if any.

In the wake of Mayor OaConnell and all but one of his councillorsa resolution last month to de-corporatise Wide Bay Water, the workers have been called in for group and individual meetings with council executive staff.

The bulk of those in-limbo workers spent Christmas filling in job application forms.

aCouncil is calling this closed merit applications,a said one WBW worker yesterday, who cannot be named for fear of losing his job before the application process is completed. …
