GUISBOROUGH made it seven straight wins for the season, and according to skipper Owen Edwards, Saturday's success at Stockton was the best of the bunch.

The table toppers reckon they can play better than in the 26-17 win at Station Road. But as it came against Durham and North One promotion rivals, the skipper feels it is the best feeling the players have had in their blistering start.

"We're ecstatic," he said. "This is the most pleasing win because it was our first big test. We were missing a few players and I broke a rib last week, so this game was painful but worth it.

"We want to be out of this league. We are progressing well. This run has come earlier than we expected - but you don't complain about that."

Stockton led 12-5 at half time, with Jeremy Good kicking four penalties from four attempts, while Edwards scored a try for Guisborough.

But the visitors took a firm grip early in the second half, helped by a yellow card for Good. Rob Leggot burst through for a try, Adrian Rose converting to level the scores.

Stockton piled on pressure, especially after Leggot was yellow-carded - but Guisborough defended stoutly, though Mark Conway was driven over for a Stockton try on 73 minutes.

"We seem to pull away in the second half of games. I think it's down to determination and fitness," said Edwards. "We've developed 21 players through the minis and juniors at the club, and 11 of them in the first team starting line up. That gives us tremendous spirit."

Stockton skipper Mark Skirving told the Gazette three weeks ago that his side's big test against the likes of Alnwick and Guisborough was coming up. They have lost to both, and he pulled no punches after Saturday's defeat. …
