across Teesside are to benefit from a sporting windfall.

A sum of PS735,000 has been provided for seven full-time sports professionals to offer advice to college students.

The full-time "college sport makers" will work in colleges over the next five years.

On Teesside, Middlesbrough College, Prior Pursglove College in Guisborough, and Redcar and Cleveland College will all benefit from the funding, as will two colleges in Hartlepool and one in Darlington as well as some from Tyneside. The cash is part of a PS20m national scheme of National Lottery funding, run by Sport England.

Participation in sport is lower among young women than men at college so the new workers will work to encourage more females get involved.

Robert Grierson, vice principal at Prior Pursglove College, said: "We're chuffed to bits about the funding; it replaces some funding that was taken away a few years ago, so we're delighted. …
