ONE of the best decisions Pratten couple Tracey and Jeffrey Clegg have made was to home-school their precious six children.

Being one of three families in Warwick who are registered to home school, the Cleggs are contributing to what recent Queensland Government figures show is a rising number of regional and remote families choosing this alternative method of education.

When their eldest daughter Tegan was struggling to learn with conventional methods at age 11, the Cleggs, desperate to help their child receive a valuable education, decided to try home schooling as a last resort and say they have never looked back.

While Tegan is now 21, finished school and left home, the remaining five children ranging from five to 13 years of age are progressing in leaps and bounds with the method this family has chosen.

Mrs Clegg feels confident the children are not missing out on anything by being educated at home.

C[pounds sterling]The Home-schooling Supplies curriculum teaches all the same skills they would learn if they were going to a school, but is delivered by different methods,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]The phonic-based program is self-instructional, so the kids work through it themselves and only come to me if they have problems. As the program is based on individual achievement they have the opportunity to work at their own pace and develop their individual talents.C[yen]

The process to become registered for home-schooling is quite tedious and involves a lot of planning and communication with the Department of Education.

Parents must present a detailed plan for the year, a copy of the curriculum they are working with, and their goals and philosophies for each child.

Once this is submitted a probation period follows and if the requirements have been satisfied, permission is then granted. …
