A VOLUNTEER at the Redcar lifeboat station has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the RNLI in the Queen's New Year Honours.

Mike Picknett, 44, is the senior helmsman at the charity's Redcar station.

He has been an RNLI volunteer for more than 28 years.

Mr Picknett said it was a great honour to be awarded the BEM.

"I will wear it with pride," he said. "I consider it to be a team award for all the volunteer crew at Redcar who dedicate so much of their lives to the RNLI and the work it does.

"To say that I was shocked on being told of the award would be an understatement. I was completely shocked and speechless," said Mike.

He said he had been brought up as part of a fishing and lifeboat family.

"It is part of what we do. The lifeboat is part of life in Redcar."

He said that over the years he had probably taken part in more than 500 rescues "in all weathers, and at all times of the day and night".
