MACKAY: If youave ever been sick or heading to surgery in Mackay you may recognise this kindly face.

Pam Frost has been practising the caring craft she loves for 50 years now, a milestone she reached just yesterday.

And she has worked in every hospital in the city during that time.

The role she fills now in the surgical pre-admission clinic at the Mackay Base Hospital is a world away from the one she entered on January 1, 1963 as a bright-eyed girl in a heavily starched white uniform.

aIn those days it was very old fashioned,a Mrs Frost said.

aYou had to live in the nursesa quarters even though your parents lived in Mackay.

aWe moved in on a Sunday night, and the next morning we all had to line up with our uniforms on.

aThey were white and stiff and youad get them back from the laundry and they would almost stand up on the floor they were that stiff.a

Pam Frost, nee James, was just 16 at the time, and training was vastly different to the university degrees of today. …
