THE surf at Double Island Point remained calm yesterday despite some disputed predictions that former cyclone Freda could cross the Queensland coast over or just above Fraser Island on Monday.

Coastlife forecaster Mike Perry this week warned against prematurely writing off the low pressure system as a threat to the Cooloola and Sunshine Coasts, predicting possible waves up to 2.4m early next week.

While Bureau of Meteorology modelling predicts Freda will deteriorate into a weak low pressure system that will cross north of Fraser Island, weather models from the US show the system taking a big turn on Sunday and heading straight towards Fraser.

Shark nets at Rainbow Beach were removed this week in anticipation of big seas.

If Freda does cross at Fraser it could be at least a category one system that will push strong swell ahead of it.

The weather system was yesterday still centred close to the top of Noumea moving about four knots in a south, south-westerly direction. …
