IT will come as no surprise to DB (December 31) that, being the "barrack room lawyer" that I am, I would have to reply to his criticism of my opinions.

Everyone is entitled to have them and express them. I still believe that the police went around in pairs in certain areas for safety reasons rather than it just being "the fashion". I doubt there were enough sergeants to pair up with each beat patrolman.

Obviously, the days of the police patrolling on foot in any numbers are long gone. Since I was a teenager, the number of houses in the region has increased by tens of thousands along with an increase in population - policing in the old manner would not be possible now. It is possible that crime and other bad behaviour may have gone up proportionally. That said, on the very odd occasion that I have been in the town centre at night there seems to be an adequate presence. I still maintain that there have always been parts of Newcastle that were and your "mates" think, DB. …
