Gaby Sets Her Sights on Life as a Doctor

WHEN 21-year-old Gaby McCray arrived back from overseas on Christmas Eve, there was a letter waiting for her on her bed.

It contained an offer from the University of Melbourne to study medicine in 2013.

Growing up, most young people change their minds a million times about what they want to do.

But not Gaby.

SheCOs known she wants to be a doctor since she was eight years old.

Gaby graduated from Chanel College in 2008 with an OP3.

She then went to study for a Bachelor of Science, majoring in biomedical science at The University of Queensland.

During her undergrad degree, Gaby lived at Dushesne College on St Lucia campus in Brisbane.

She describes it as the best three years of her life.

C[pounds sterling]I got into college because of academics and culture interest; ICOve always been very into dance,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]I made the most amazing friends instantly there.C[yen]

At the end of her undergraduate degree, Gaby wasnCOt sure exactly what she wanted to do in medicine.

SheCOd always been interested in neuroscience, but said she never wanted to be a brain surgeon.

It was the research side that appealed to her.

C[pounds sterling]I met an academic from the Queensland Brain Institute at a formal dinner we had a college,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]I chatted to him, and kept in contact. I got offered a position as a researcher at the Qld Brain Institute.C[yen]

Last year, Gaby undertook her honours year at the BrownCOs Laboratory at the University of Queensland.

For her thesis, Gaby decided to look at the rotator cuff in the shoulder.

She ended up making a significant discovery.

C[pounds sterling]Out of the four muscles in the rotator cuff, only one muscle sits in between the shoulder blade and the rib cage,C[yen] Gaby said. …
