BestBet St. Johns Resigning Its Hand; Poker Room to Close, but Most Employees to Be Relocated to 2 Other Sites

Faced with declining revenues, the St. Johns County poker room is going to close.

Employees at BestBet St. Johns were told of the news Wednesday afternoon. A spokesman said it would close as of Monday.

Most of the staff will be relocated to the poker rooms in Orange Park or Jacksonville, said Michael Munz of the Dalton Agency. A few may be released, he said, but he had no numbers.

Munz did not say whether the facility would continue with simulcast wagering, or what the future of the property would be.

A former greyhound track, BestBet St. Johns was the first poker room to open in Northeast Florida, in 2004. The Orange Park location followed in 2008.

In March, Jacksonville Greyhound racing opened its third poker room in the area - this one on Monument Road near Regency Square.

With 70 tables, it's the largest poker room in the state. It immediately became the highest-grossing poker room in the state, too.
