Armed Police in 'Firearm' Drama; False Alarm after a BB Gun Is Mistaken for the Real Thing

ARMED police surrounded a city centre block of flats after officers received a report that a firearm was inside.

Six police cars and a police dogs van descended on a flat in Waterloo House, in Thornton Street, in Newcastle city centre yesterday lunchtime after reports that someone saw a gun.

But it proved to be a false alarm when officers realised it was a BB gun and the owner handed it over voluntarily.

The police cars remained outside the block of residential flats for nearly three hours, prompting speculation by those living and working nearby.

One resident who lives in a flat in Waterloo House said: "It looked like a drugs bust. They came in wearing what looked like riot gear and they had the police dogs.

"I didn't see which flat they went into or who they spoke to but it was a bit of a shock seeing so many of them outside.

"They didn't knock down any doors so I think they got into which ever flat they were wanting without much bother. …
