IT IS every parentas worst nightmare.

The moment you realise your child is missing.

Sunshine Coast parents Cathy and Steve West lived through an agonising 30 minutes on Christmas Day when they could not find their four-year-old son, Sam.

They attribute the kindness of strangers for getting them through and want to thank them and remind other parents how quickly and easily it can happen.

The Wests were enjoying holiday festivities with family and friends at the Mooloolaba Spit when Sam was suddenly nowhere to be found.

Frantic, the family scoured the beach, boardwalks, parks and amenities in a desperate search for the youngster.

Mrs West described the 30 minutes when Sam was missing as the worst time in her life.

aIt was terrible and I didnat know what to do,a she said.

aWhen we realised he was on his scooter, we hoped he would stick to the pathways, but you never know. We had people running up the boardwalk and the beach and complete strangers came and helped, but being Christmas Day, it was like a tent city. …
