WHEN it comes to a place to call home the difference between good and bad design can be summed up in one word: commitment.

Architect Christopher Day believes we desperately need buildings with soul, buildings in which we feel alive, creative, at peace.

The client must have a degree of responsibility for the design of their spaces and insist on their creative input, Day says.

For the architect or designer it requires listening not just to the client but to the site itself Co listen to its spirit as well as to the clientCOs dreams and hopes.

Anthroposophic medicine author Reinhold Faeth, who looks at ways of preventing illness rather than treating it, points to the work of Day in creating healthy buildings.

Faeth says people behave differently in different environments. That they think and act differently in different surroundings.

Faeth says few people want cheap-looking buildings, nor do they appreciate sterile spaces to work in.

For Christopher Day, it makes a lot of difference whether buildings are designed for people or together with them.

In his book, Places of the Soul, Day asks how much good design is worth? He says it can increase land values, but there are other reasons for this.

Houses in the catchment area of a good school, for example, can be worth several percentage points more. …
