BOTH Scottish league bodies yesterday agreed in principle to merge as part of a radical shake-up of the professional game.

Talks hosted by the Scottish Football Association produced an unexpectedly swift breakthrough that could lead to a combined three-tier structure incorporating extended play-offs, a pyramid system allowing movement into the new league and a fairer distribution of wealth.

The Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League will separately put the plans to their clubs, 42 in all, by the end of the month, but there was widespread consensus among those who were represented at yesterday's Hampden talks and change could even come into force by the start of next season.

Agreement has veered yet further towards a 12-12-18 structure that would see the bottom four teams in the "Premiership" and top four teams in the "Championship" move into a middle division 22 games into the season. The top half would start the next campaign in the top flight. …
