Off Licence Owner Sold Alcohol to 14-Year-Old

THE owner of a Tyneside off-licence has been hit with fines by a court after being found guilty of selling alcohol to an underage girl.

Owner of the Liquourmart store on Coatsworth Road in Gateshead, Allan Hindmarch, sold wine to a 14-year-old in a test purchase operation last April.

Gateshead Council trading standards officers had been alerted to the store after they had received information that youngsters were being sold alcohol. Liquormart was one of five stores targeted during the test purchase operations.

During the test purchase at Liquormart, no effort was made to check the age of the purchaser. She was able to buy the 13.5% volume wine in clear view of a plain clothed police officer, also taking part in the operation.

Although he did not attend, Mr Hindmarch pleaded not guilty to the sale of alcohol to an under 18 at Gateshead Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Magistrates found Mr Hindmarch guilty in his absence. …
