Seagulls Home to Roost in Bid to Build a Better Image

RUGBY LEAGUE: They might be playing one less home game this season, but expect to see a lot more of the Hervey Bay Seagulls in 2013.

In a bid to build a better image for the club, Seagulls joint coaches Mitch Yarrow and Tyrone Hopgood are devising a program designed to get their teammates more active in the community.

Yarrow, a born and bred Hervey Bay local, envisaged each player would be required to participate in at least five community events or initiatives throughout the year.

He said it was important players reached out to fans and show they cared about the city they represented.

aWe are trying to change the image of the Seagulls as the community sees it, rather than the blokes who just play football and sit in the Torquay (Hotel),a Yarrow said.

aWe want to give back to the community and we are working hard on becoming a community-based team which we hope will help bring support for us and help us on the field.a

Yarrow said community events would range from getting their hands dirty on Clean Up Australia Day to paying respect as a team at the Anzac Day march. …
