TOT Irvine impressed as he claimed man-of-the-match honours in his last match debut for Middlesbrough UA in their 14-13 defeat to North Yorkshire.

Playing for Middlesbrough B, he showed no signs of nerves as the blackball county completed their season, winning all three of his frames.

North Yorkshire won the first set 6-3 before Middlesbrough took the second by the same score thanks to wins from Alan Wilson, JP Humphrey and Kevin Baker.

The first six frames in the final set were shared to make it 12-12, but Yorkshire went on to win the frame and match through Ian Corns.

Freddy Meggison was in top form for Middlesbrough with three wins from three, and R Whiteley won two from three.

Middlesbrough's A team needed to win to qualify for the national finals but slipped to another 14-13 defeat as Yorkshire won their first game of the season.

Middlesbrough won the first and second sets 5-4 and led 3-2 in the third needing only one from four for victory.

But Yorkshire never gave up and after Stu Watson hit his second eight-ball clearance to reduce the gap, John Corner made it 13-12 and Ricky Smith won the last frame after Norman Lightower levelled.

Dave Siberry and Alan Henderson were voted joint man-of-the-match for Middlesbrough after winning all three of their games. John Pinchbeck and Shaun Reed both won two from three.

Tyne &Wear won the league, defeating runners-up Redcar in their last match. South Yorks defeated East Yorks 20-7 in the other game.
