THE directionless beginning to the week continued on Wednesday with investors in a cautious mood.

The FTSE 100 Index rose 18.5 points to finish the day at 6197.6. The UK Prime Minster's speech on Britain's membership of the EU did not have a significant impact on the direction of the market. If re-elected in the next General Election, the PM pledged to hold a referendum on whether the UK should remain in the EU.

On the economic front, data released showed that the UK jobless rate fell to its lowest level since 2011 and over the three months to November the rate fell from 7.8% to 7.7%. In the US, the focus was on whether US law-makers would vote to extend the Government's debt ceiling until May 19. Commentators believe the extension would hopefully allow a more comprehensive plan to be put in place during the intervening period. In the FTSE 100 Index, Unilever was among the top performing stocks following the release of its full-year results. …
