HANS WAS HEIRI/ ZIMMERMANN & DE PERROT Barbican, EC2 THINGS just won't keep still in shows by Zimmermann & de Perrot -- even the walls and the floors can't be relied on -- and this latest folly from the Swiss duo is no exception.

Hans was Heiri is part-acrobatics, part-dance, part-slapstick, with sound designer Dimitri de Perrot DJ-ing live onstage to glue everything together.

The cast are a talented and oddball bunch, cartoonish and nattily dressed -- somewhere between Looney Tunes and the Royal Tenenbaums -- and they only occasionally step over the line marked "irritating".

The show has the freewheeling feel of dance theatre; Pina Bausch minus all the angst. Scenes spawn and mutate to make a stage full of harmless chaos and the centrepiece is a brilliant piece of set: a rotating house of four rooms that tips upside down with its residents inside, so they end up walking the walls and dancing on the ceiling, a la Lionel Richie. …
