AUSTRALIA Day means many things for many people.

For some, itas simply a day at the beach, with barbecues, backyard cricket and zinc on the nose.

In some ways, that is it for me too a but thereas more.

The first line of our national anthem speaks volumes about this day.

aAustralians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free ...a

That line, to me, reminds us we are an ancient nation of some 40,000 years, yet we are also one of the most modern societies in the world.

It reminds us that despite our history, we are at the forefront of innovative thinking and while we are benefiting from the past, we are all contributing to the future.

Today, as always, is a day for evaluation of who we are as a nation.

It is a time for reminding ourselves just how fortunate most of us are to live here. …
