WOMEN have complained for generations about many menas tendency to complain when they are sick, but research has said that man flu may not be a myth after all.

A neuroscientist from Britain's Durham University, Amanda Ellison, revealed men may suffer more when they have colds because males have more temperature receptors in the brain.

Dr Ellison said the difference lies in the area of the brain which balances an assortment of different mechanisms of the body, including temperature.

She found that the preoptic nucleus, this area of the brain that balances temperature, is the same size in both girls and boys, but when boys hit puberty testosterone starts makes this area larger.

aWhen you have a cold, one of the things that happens is you get an increase in temperature to fight off the bugs,a Dr Ellison said.

aThe bugs canat survive at higher temperatures. When your immune system is under attack the preoptic nucleus increases temperature to kill off the bugs. …
