Reds Run in Tries to Post Trial Victory

THE QUEENSLAND Reds began their 2013 season on a positive note with victory over the Auckland Blues in the Super Rugby trial match at Clive Berghofer Stadium last night.

In front of a near capacity crowd of about 7000 spectators, the Reds overcame an early 14-0 deficit to post a 41-35 victory over a Blues outfit missing their strong All Blacks contingent.

The Reds crossed for seven tries Co the majority of them from close range Co with the Blues replying with five five-pointers, all converted by fullback Marty McKenzie.

Reds five-eighth Quade Cooper landed only two of his five conversion attempts while Mike Harris kicked one from two.

The visitors had the Reds on the back foot after 18 minutes following tries from Angus TaCOavao and Ronald Raaymakers.

But tries from lock forward Adam Wallace-Harrison (28th min), James Hanson (33rd) and Radike Samo (39th) enabled the Reds to grab a 17-14 half-time lead.

Former Downs player Greg Holmes was one of numerous Reds replacement players sent out for the second half.

Six minutes after the break the Reds set up what turned out to be a significant 10-point buffer when Rod Davies ran off a Cooper pass to cross and put the hosts up 24-14.

The margin stretched to 29-14 two minutes later when Wallace-Harrison crashed over for his second try.

The Blues hit back with a try to Francis Saili which followed a length-of-the-field movement and several missed Reds tackles and another five pointer to Albert Nikoro which edged the Blues to within a point of Queensland at 29-28. …
