WHILE England exuded the youth-driven promise of a club side on the inexorable rise, Brazil offered little comfort to those who fear for their fate as World Cup hosts.

The difference lay not so much in Jack Wilshere's superiority over Neymar and the even more exciting Lucas Moura but the relative fertility of their environments.

England, thanks to the guidance of Roy Hodgson, are looking like a team with a method. Only when Luiz Felipe Scolari is able to exert the same effect will Brazil be serious contenders for 2014.

After 150 years, the Football Association were entitled to get one thing right and the appointment of Hodgson was it.

We can now forget about all the money wasted on Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello and a host of assistants, relax and see where the catalyst Wilshere takes Wayne Rooney and the centurions of the lost generation.

Scolari, by contrast, faces nearly 17 months of mounting pressure. …
