Emnes Needs to Be Happy

MARVIN Emnes epitomises the footballer who needs to feel happy on the inside to show on the outside what a good player he is.

It will come as little surprise to Middlesbrough fans that a cloud has followed around the Dutchman since August.

The outstanding player of last season - he was his club's top scorer - has been a shadow of his former self over this campaign.

Whatever has ailed him has affected his performances.

It reached a low point in the recent FA Cup home tie against Aldershot Town when, after a particularly poor performance, Emnes was booed when substituted during the match, albeit only by a small section of the support.

Put simply, it just hasn't happened for him so far and Tony Mowbray could really do with that cloud lifting so Emnes can emerge from his shadow.

Mowbray said: "Marvin needs to be happy in his life. He needs to come in to work, smile, laugh and have fun with his mates. He has a couple who he is particularly close with and when he is smiling around the building you know everything is fine.

"When he is deep, when he is sombre, he is ... "We need Marvin Emnes at this moment.

We need his talent because of the way he plays. He is important to us and not necessarily just the goals he scores. It can be the little passes he puts through.

The stuff people sometimes don't see such as his little touches that can keep moves going are what we've missed. I will be supportive of Marvin as much as I can.

Whether he is on the pitch or off it.

"You have to support people in football.

I will never say to our supporters to do this or that, but when players are not hitting the heights they need support rather than criticism.

"My job is to analyse where they are. If I think a player needs a rest or to be taken out of the firing line and give somebody else an opportunity is just as important."

Another player Mowbray needs, but hasn't been able to rely on for almost five months, is Mustapha Carayol. …
