IN the days of Corinthian values a champion was defined as someone who, having been knocked down, rose from the dust, spat out a mouthful of despair to cross the line a winner. I think Chumbawamba wrote a song about it but on reflection it may have been something to do with binge drinking.

A similar view can be taken of good service. Somebody bringing you your soup without managing to get a thumb in it is doing their job. Adding in the advice that chef can't find his pet fly is going the extra yard.

It is not service to be kept waiting in a queue for 'fast' food simply because a kitchen hand with an NVQ in wearing a hat struggles with the technology of the spatula.

Then there is the idea that you may be charged for service. Really? It's not the food on the plate then? Were I to value indifference and co-ordination issues I would buy a Jeremy Kyle box set.

Therefore, I am more than pleased to say that Skoda is worthy of this week's gold star.

Through no fault of anybody's the planned Superb Outdoor, a four wheel drive estate after the style of the Audi Allroad, could not be delivered. However, if a man flying back from taking a car to Germany could be contacted, then before breakfast a replacement would arrive. He was, it was, all very happy. As a result I can bring you some words about the 1.6-litre diesel Skoda Roomster Scout, an estate which fits in alongside niche vehicles like the Citroen Berlingo and Renault Kangoo. Put simply, it's a van with windows.

That's not to say it drives like a van. No, not at all. You would have no problem doing a long motorway stint in this, neither is there any intrusive road noise. And it's handy around town.

Obviously with 103bhp to play with this is going to be no racing car. But then hey, where's the call for van racing? …
