Dean Richards was a happy man despite his Newastle Falcons side being pushed to the wire in their 13-9 victory over Leeds Carnegie.

The director of rugby said after arguably their toughest test of the Championship season: "We did not panic and that was really pleasing.

"Even at the end when there was a lot riding on it we just got on with our job.

"We played with a clear head and got the result when the conditions were so bad." With the game moved from Headingley to a muddy Otley, Richards joked: "I was not sure who had won it in the end because all the shirts were the same colour!

"I was shouting to the touch judge about one of their players being offside, and it actually turned out to be one of our guys!

"They were very difficult conditions for the players, it was hard work and the boys came through it.

"We converted the one scoring chance we had, and we took that try well considering."

Finding room for improvement, he added: "We were caught twice down the short-side, which was down to our line-speed and over-committing at the breakdown. …
