MEASURES to tackle problems of delays in admitting emergency patients to the James Cook University Hospital are being introduced, health minister Dr Michael Poulter has said.

Speaking in a Commons debate yesterday, Dr Poulter described current delays as unacceptable.

He said specific measures had been taken including: | PS650,000 of investment being put into extra nurses and consultants; | A winter ward would be open; | Work was under way to redesign patient services, along the lines of the rapid response teams and intermediate care teams to prevent inappropriate hospital admissions; | A separate paediatric accident and emergency department was being considered, and | Interviews were to take place for increased nursing capacity at Guisborough and East Cleveland Hospital to improve the scope of the community health care response and possibly increase the hours the service is available.
