CLASSIC rock will be making a comeback if these four lads have their way.

Almost two years after Great Man Theory came to be - which they tell me was due to a rather haphazard meeting at university - and the Newcastle lads are determined to get their "whirlwind of creativity" noticed.

Made up of James Smithells, lead vocals, Rob Jarvis, lead guitar, Jona Old, bass and drummer Matt Absolon, the band have paid their dues sweating in tiny venues, often to minimal crowds.

But their love of what they do and passion to make their own brand of music keeps them on track to play to audiences, no matter how big or small.

Drummer Matt tells me: "We love playing the pubs and clubs, we've always said we'd like to come back to the local pubs like The Three Tuns in Gateshead "We want go as we can.

if we were to make a career out of this, but there isn't really an in-between from the pubs to the O2 academies and arenas where you see most of the big bands." We a very ambitious bunch, dream " Rob adds: "North East crowds tend to be some of the most fun we've played too, they know how to get lively, without too much coaxing."

Great Man Theory have been around long enough to see the challenges faced by local musicians at the moment who are all battling to be heard in a minefield of hundreds of competitors.

"I think the recession has hit it hard, generally it's unpredictable, we can turn up to the same venue on a Tuesday and Sunday, the Tuesday will be rammed full of punters loving the tunes, the Sunday we will play to the barman and the sound tech," explains Matt.

"We, as punters ourselves, love local unsigned original bands, we would be hypocritical to sit at home moaning about playing to nobody the night before when we could be at another bands gig that very night, we try our best to attend gigs as much as we can. …
