Warning for Swimmers; Lifeguards Urge Caution during Treacherous Conditions

SWIMMERS have been warned to use caution on Sunshine Coast beaches this week, with more wild weather expected to make conditions unpredictable.

The warning comes just a day after the death of an Estonian tourist on Peregian Beach.

Sunshine Coast lifeguard supervisor Rhys Drury said beachgoers should err on the side of caution as most beaches had been changed by recent weather.

aThereas a fair bit of erosion, shifting of sandbanks, sinkholes and obviously itas changed the beach conditions a bit,a he said.

aThe beaches at the northern end of the Coast are more susceptible to the swells.

aOpen beaches like Peregian, Coolum and Sunshine are probably a bit more treacherous in poor weather.a

Mr Drury said Saturday afternoonas drowning was a tragic reminder that vigilance needed to be maintained at all Coast beaches no matter what level of experience swimmers had.
