Midfielder Turnbull Helps Spartans Turn the Corner

STEPHEN Turnbull's return to Blyth had an immediate effect as the Spartans crushed Ashton United 4-1 at Croft Park.

The former Hartlepool United and Gateshead midfield playmaker returned to Blyth after a spell in Australia and was influential in the engine room of the side.

Spartans got off to a terible start when they conceded a goal in the first minute.

But they hit back to lead through Robbie Dale's penalty and Lee Mason's tap-in. Young striker Dan Maguire then scored early and late in the second half to seal a convincing win, much to the delight of manager Paddy Atkinson.

Atkinson said: "Stephen Turnbull was influential, and added communication that has perhaps been missing at times this season.

"We seemed to be a bit more like the Blyth that he left a couple of years ago.

"It has taken time but we have spoken to the directors and we are beginning to bring in the players we want to this club. Turnbull, Jennings, Maguire and Dale were all tremondous, along with Lee Mason, while Phil Airey played at right-back and did a fine job. …
