FAST-GROWING IHC Engineering Business is today named as this month's table topper in the Ernst & Young Manufacturers' League ... the showcase for the region's most successful manufacturing firms.

The Stocksfield-based company went from strength to strength in 2012: securing new contracts, fulfilling long-standing orders, more than doubling its turnover and growing its impressive staff base.

The Northumberland firm is a member of the Dutch shipbuilding group IHC Merwede, which is a world market leader for the supply of efficient dredging vessels, customised offshore vessels and their equipment.

Speaking about their success, IHC EB managing director, Jon Dale said: "We managed to send out two towers towards the end of last year which were worth PS40m to the company.

"We've got three projects in-house at the moment NEXT GENERATION build on the success of the which are worth PS100m collectively.

We doubled our turnover last year from PS26m to just under PS54m.

"If we are successful in carrying out all the projects we have in the pipeline, then we will have an ever better year in 2013.

"We have around 200 staff at the moment and we're actively trying to recruit engineers but it's not easy.

The North East is a centre of excellence for offshore subsea companies and there has been a high demand across all the companies for qualified engineering staff."

At the end of 2011 the firm scooped two awards for Design Team of the Year (BEEA) and Innovation and Technology Award (NOF Energy).

Last year Mike Smith, one of the team's senior design engineers, was nominated for the British Engineering Excellence Award.

Throughout 2012, IHC EB continued to make real progress with an ambitious business improvement programme, as well as further strengthening their management capabilities. …
