A DAUNTING task awaits the Blyth Spartans today at Hednesford Town, who were the early season favourites to win the league and currently sit second. Winning their games in hand though, would see them go top.

For Paddy Atkinson's side things haven't been going as well, only one win in ten league games since the start of December seeing them drop to 15th.

However, on Tuesday night the Spartans beat Ashton United (10th) 4-1 courtesy of goals from Robbie Dale, Dan Maguire (2), and Lee Mason.

Atkinson said: "It's going to be a difficult game against a very good Hednesford team. We go in on the back of a good win but we picked up injuries meaning we are not at full strength. It's the story of our season really."

The manager admitted selection would be somewhat difficult with the injuries to Rob Dale, Phil Airey and Joe Kendrick ruling them out: "We have a bit of a selection crisis with injuries," he added. "It could be that we just have to change our tactics slightly to cater for the absences, which, of course, is not ideal. …
