NEWCASTLE's fascinating history has been documented over the years in periodicals, books, museum exhibitions and archives.

But since the internet emerged in 1989, people have been able to access a huge range of online information.

As technology has advanced over the decades, specialist resources such as historical forums have become widely available for research.

The Newcastle Forum of is one of the best local history websites around, covering both Newcastle and the North East. Originally, developed in the United States the website was used to concentrate on the construction of Skyscrapers, before it spread around the world.

Now, it features forums concerning all construction, history and general 'urban issues' around the world, including it's very popular Newcastle section, which was set up on October 14th 2009.

If you are interested in local history and are passionate about Newcastle and the region, then visit and read through the many 'historic threads' it has on there. The site would also would very much welcome contributions.

Each thread focuses on a particular topic and allows members to discuss in detail the different aspects of it, as well as exploring its local and social history.

The topics covered are vast and there is a wealth of knowledge on the site. Its contributors often share unique information along with rare photos and documents from the past, including the ones with this article.

The large site has a comprehensive "alphabetical index" that guides visitors through it, and some of the individual subjects covered, include: old adverts of shops and businesses from years gone by, insights into long forgotten shops and major department stores, old place names, mining tragedies, a history of the Victoria Tunnel and other subterranean Newcastle. …
