Pool Look on Form to Meet Hughes' Target

Scunthorpe United ................................ 1 Hartlepool United.................................. 2 IT'S a big ask, but Hartlepool United are going some way to matching John Hughes' target.

Stay unbeaten until the end of the season as the manager has demanded and there's little doubt Pool will still be in League One next season.

It would be some achievement, but noone would have thought Pool could go six without defeat, taking a healthy 14 points from a possible 18, to make a real fight of trying to avoid relegation.

Victory at Scunthorpe still leaves Pool some eight points short of the safety line, although they do have a game in hand over The Iron, the team above the drop zone.

There's a new-found belief and confidence about Hughes' side these days and they are a different side all together than the raggy outfit that failed so miserably in the first-half of the season. The Iron had won their last three home games, yet were comprehensively outplayed and outpassed by Pool, particularly in the first-half.

Hughes said: "When you're scoring goals you've always got a chance and we're doing that right now. We can only look after ourselves and we have to keep our feet on the ground. You saw in the first half the football we can play.

"It's all about mindset,'' he insisted. "You have to believe in yourself no matter what.

"I'm talking about having a heart the size of a lion and I still think they can dip into that mindset a little bit more and become better.

"A football club is nothing without its supporters and they were a different class. The supporters are everything. When the club is doing well it's great for the community.'' A week after sending their fans home happy from Victoria Park with a dramatic win over Orient, this time they headed back up the A1 equally delirious. …
